2012 Hospital Guide methodology documents
There are a number of different clinical indicators in the Hospital Guide. This section provides detailed information on how these indicators are calculated and where the data comes from. The data period covered by the 2012 Hospital Guide runs from April 2011 through March 2012.
There are four main headings for these documents: Mortality, Efficiency, Clinical Variance and Appendices.
Mortality
- Hospital Standardised Mortality Ratio (HSMR)
- Emergency HSMR (weekday)
- Emergency HSMR (weekend)
- Deaths after surgery (PSI)
- Deaths in low risk diagnosis groups (PSI) (crude rate)

Efficiency
- Efficiency indicator aggregate score
- Readmissions within one week (crude rate)

- Procedures with limited clinical effectiveness (crude rate)

- Long-stay elderly patients (crude rate)
- Long-stay surgical patients (adjusted rate)
- Excess bed days (elective crude rate)
- Outpatients: Rates of follow up
- Outpatients: Rates of attendance
- Operations not performed at the weekend
- Scans available at the weekend
- Bed occupancy by day
Clinical variance
- Ratio of breast reconstruction to mastectomy
- PCI for AMI
- Elective laparoscopic cholecystectomy (day case rate)
